De Beers is forever?

De Beers — A Diamond Is Forever

Edward Jay Epstein’s 1982 investigation on The Atlantic Monthly has lost none of its punch on revealing how De Beers Consolidated Mines has single-handedly created a multi-billion-euro market for a stone that was perceived to have little intrinsic value as lately as the 1930s.

As Epstein observes:

The diamond invention is far more than a monopoly for fixing diamond prices; it is a mechanism for converting tiny crystals of carbon into universally recognized tokens of wealth, power, and romance. . . . The illusion had to be created that diamonds were forever — “forever” in the sense that they should never be resold.
“Have You Ever Tried To Sell A Diamond?”

. . . And what has happened since 1982?

Epstein returns to the same theme in his 2000 Wall Street Journal article about “blood diamonds”, The New Diamond Con.

The late 1990s De Beers’ de-cartelization efforts are covered by CNN Money: De Beers buffs its image.

The Business Day in Johannesburg explains the latest [May 2004] on De Beers’ sematics on its cartel: De Beers Cartel System Under Renewed Pressure

And lastly, for a comprehensive book-lenght survey that expands on the 1982 article, you can do no better than spend a night, or three, in front of your monitor reading Epstein’s The Diamond Invention, a 22-chapter book available for free on his website.

Missionaries = Destruction

Monks and novices collecting alms on horseback, Mae Chan, Chiang Rai, Thailand

The Asia Times has highlighted a serious development underway in Thailand and the rest of mainland Southeast Asia: the conversion “heathen” tribes to Christianity.

It seems many of these missionaries are agents for Christian fundamentalist groups, especially from the US, who are competing to expand by converting more people, which means they can garner more donations and hence convert more people. . . .

Accounts of sex abuse and fraud are widespread, as are the documented cases of “missionaries . . . destroying traditional cultures and societies, exploiting highlanders’ ignorance and spurring conflict”.

This is an important article to study!

Do you suspect you — or someone you know — might be a heterosexual?

Heterosexuality is gaining foothold in your community! Many so-called “straight” people are teaching your children! These deviants are openly displaying their “lifestyle”! If someone you know suspects that he or she might be a heterosexual, urge them to consider these points! Your — and their — reward will be MUNIFICENT!

  • What do you think caused your heterosexuality?
  • When and how did you decide that you were a heterosexual? Is it possible that your heterosexuality is just a phase that you may grow out of?
  • Is it possible your heterosexuality stems from a neurotic fear of others of the same sex?
  • If you’ve never slept with a person of the same sex, is it possible that all you need is a good gay or lesbian lover?
  • To whom have you disclosed your heterosexual tendencies? How did he or she react?
  • Why do you heterosexuals feel compelled to seduce others into your lifestyle?
  • Why do you insist on flaunting your heterosexuality? Why can’t you just be what you are and keep quiet about it?
  • Would you want your children to be heterosexual knowing the problems that they’d face?
  • With all the societal support marriage receives, the divorce rate is spiraling. Why are there so few stable relationships among heterosexuals?
  • Why do heterosexuals place so much emphasis on sex?
  • Considering the menace of overpopulation, how could the human race survive if everyone were heterosexual like you?
  • How can you become a whole person if you limit yourself to compulsive, exclusive heterosexuality, and fail to develop you natural, healthy homosexual potential?
  • There seem to be very few happy heterosexuals. Techniques have been developed that might enable you to change if you really want to. Have you considered trying aversion therapy?

“The roots of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal lie not in the criminal inclinations of a few Army reservists but in a decision, approved last year by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, to expand a highly secret operation, which had been focussed on the hunt for Al Qaeda, to the interrogation of prisoners in Iraq. Rumsfeld’s decision embittered the American intelligence community, damaged the effectiveness of élite combat units, and hurt America’s prospects in the war on terror.”

Seymour Hersh, “The Gray Zone: How a Secret Pentagon Program Came to Abu Ghraib,” The New Yorker, 24 May 2004.

But perhaps it is only fair to let Mr. Rumsfeld have the last word:

“Now what is the message there? The message is that there are no ‘knowns.’ There are thing we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don’t know we don’t know.”
“Secretary Rumsfeld Press Conference at NATO Headquarters, Brussels, Belgium,” US Mission to NATO, 6 June 2002.
